How We Got Started
In 2018, Ethiopia’s political landscape showed signs of peace, allowing the diaspora to reconnect with loved ones. As the daughter of a prominent Oromo freedom fighter, I returned to Oromia after 19 years in Australia to witness the impact of my father’s sacrifices. Seeing the Oromo people experience newfound hope and freedom reaffirmed the core values Gutama Hawas stood for—eradicating suffering and empowering the disadvantaged. To continue his legacy of equality, human rights, and education, we founded the Gutama Hawas Foundation in January 2019. It is now a registered NGO in Ethiopia, working to uplift communities through education and development.
